A Film By Pascale Obolo

January 28, 2013 7:00 PMat the Mayme A. Clayton Library & Museum, Culver City

The Black Association of Documentary Filmmakers-West presents the St. Clair Bourne Fourth Mondays Series January free screening: CALYPSO ROSE: THE LIONESS OF THE JUNGLE, produced and directed by Pascale Obolo.

CALYPSO ROSE: THE LIONESS OF THE JUNGLE is simultaneously an informative love letter to Calypso music and to Miss Calypso Rose as well. The film is as much an intimate portrait about the "Grande Dame" of Calypso as it is a road movie, traveling from Trinidad and Tobago to New York, Paris, and all the way to Africa. Along the way, Calypso Rose reveals her personal story, her groundbreaking musical achievements, her commitment to defend women's rights, her faith, her worries and fears, and above all her strong love of life and people. The documentary, directed by Pascal Obolo, features a series of revealing interviews from friends, family members, contemporaries, and fans. Miss Rose became the first woman in Trinidad and Tobago to earn the title of "Calypso Monarch." In fact, the title "Calypso Monarch" was created specially for her, having to be changed from "Calypso King" in order to accommodate a female singer. The film was released domestically and worldwide on PBS World.

The screening will begin at 7:00pm, followed by a Q&A.
