Chris Hedges vs. Dinesh D’Souza
KPFK 90.7 FM will host a one-hour debate between progressive author
Chris Hedges and conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza
September 14, 2012 – Los Angeles, CA. KPFK Radio will broadcast a live debate between Chris Hedges, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and Dinesh D’Souza, the director of the new film called “2016: Obama’s America” on Tuesday, September 18th from 8 to 9 am PDT. The debate will be featured on KPFK’s popular morning drive-time show, Uprising, moderated by host Sonali Kolhatkar.
D’souza’s film is based on his 2010 book, The Roots of Obama’s Rage, which makes the case that President Obama is influenced by his Kenyan father’s political background, and that his policies today are driven by radical anti-colonial sentiments. “2016: Obama’s America” has grossed more than $26 million since its September 9th release, and is playing on 2,000 screens nationwide.
President Obama’s re-election campaign has responded, calling the film “nothing more than an insidious attempt to dishonestly smear the President by giving intellectual cover to the worst in subterranean conspiracy theories and false, partisan attacks.”
Award-winning veteran journalist, foreign correspondent and best-selling author Chris Hedges will debate D’Souza on the topic of his documentary and Obama’s policies. Hedges won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on global terrorism at the New York Times in 2002. He served as a war correspondent for nearly 20 years and is currently a senior fellow at The Nation Institute and a columnist at Truthdig.com. His most recent book, Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt with cartoonist Joe Sacco, is a piercing account of unregulated capitalism. Hedges has been an active member of the Occupy Wall Street movement.
“KPFK is excited to bring to the table these two voices from opposite ends of the political spectrum just as the election season is in full swing,” said KPFK Program Director Alan Minsky. “Not only does this promise to be an historic and exciting debate, it exemplifies KPFK’s mission of providing a platform for dialogue as a means for creating greater understanding.”
KPFK host Sonali Kolhatkar, who will moderate the debate on her show Uprising, has been a trusted voice for public radio listeners in Southern California for over ten years. She has won a number of awards from local community organizations for her work on Uprising, and in 2012 was picked as a finalist for the LA Press Club’s best radio anchor category. She is the author of the 2006 book Bleeding Afghanistan: Washington, Warlords, and the Propaganda of Silence.
