In this speech he addresses the assassination of Dr.Martin Luther King which had occurred a year earlier, as well as revisionism or the rewriting of US history and the rise of Black History. John Hope Franklins was a significant mainstream African historian whose books especially “From Slavery To Freedom” is thee most read Black History book in the US with over 4 million copies sold. It was and is required reading at most colleges and university Black Studies program and was the book used in the transition of Black history into America studies.
Most activists from the civil rights, Black Power and Pan African movement gained much of our intellectual understanding of our history in the US from his descriptive writing of our path in the US from day 1. This speech is reflective of the academic milieu of the late 1960ties.
