ISRAEL, the UN and International Justice

What Can Be Done?

The world finally took notice of long standing charges of Israeli war crimes and crimes against humanity following the brutal December to January assault on Gaza. Recent reports from Amnesty International, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Israeli soldiers themselves have been documenting these crimes. The question that looms large is what the international community can do about these violations of international law.

We begin this week’s Radio Intifada by discussing these recent reports and the current conditions in Gaza and then turn to an exploration both of UN-related possibilities and the role of national courts in applying the principle of universal jurisdiction.

Guests:

Stephen Lendman, Research Associate of the Centre for Research on Globalization

Richard Falk, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Occupied Palestinian Territories

Laurie King, former North American Coordinator of the International Campaign for Justice for the Victims of Sabra and Shatila
