star in
“Anna in the Tropics”
L.A. Theatre Works’ Radio Theatre Series will air Anna in the Tropics, written by Nilo Cruz, directed by Jose Luis Valenzuela, and featuring Jimmy Smits and Herbert Siguenza. The broadcast can be heard locally in Southern California on Sunday, October 7 from 8 -10 pm on KPFK 90.7 FM in Los Angeles (98.7 FM in Santa Barbara, 99.5 FM in Ridgecrest/China Lake and 93.7 FM in Rancho Bernardo/North San Diego), and can also be streamed on demand at www.latw.org.
This 2003 Pulitzer Prize-winning play is set in Florida in 1929, a time when cigars are still rolled by hand and "lectors" are employed to entertain the workers. The arrival of a new lector is a cause for celebration. But when he reads aloud from Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his disenfranchised listeners. The broadcast includes a conversation with actor Jimmy Smits.
