Moliere's classic French farce, "Tartuffe," or The Impostor, or The Hypocrite, was first performed in 1664 and is considered, one of the greatest masterpieces of theatre, despite Louis XIV's attempts to suppress it at the behest of the French Roman Catholic Church, which objected to the portrayal of a man of the cloth whose outward piety belied his actual lechery and deceitfulness. The characters of Tartuffe, Elmire, and Orgon are considered among the greatest in theatrical canon.
Recorded at The Invisible Studios, West Hollywood, in June of 2010.
Lead funding for Tartuffe was made possible with support from the Sidney E. Frank Foundation.
